Medicare Part D Resource Center |
Welcome to the Medicare Part D Resource Center for NHIA Members. Here you can learn about the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, or Part D, and how it applies to covering Medicare beneficiaries in need of home infusion therapy. This NHIA member resource page provides reference and educational materials available from NHIA and other resources.
Unfortunately, while Part D may cover home infusion drugs, "traditional" Medicare does not cover the essential medical services, supplies and equipment that home infusion therapy pharmacies must provide for safe and effective patient outcomes. Restated, Medicare Part D does not cover the basic ingredients of infusion patient care. NHIA has worked closely with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to address the gaps in coverage and other issues. While CMS has taken some positive steps, the agency asserts it cannot undertake additional steps needed to solve the fundamental coverage deficiencies without congressional action.
NHIA calls on Congress to pass legislation that will bring comprehensive coverage for home infusion therapies to Medicare beneficiaries:

NHIA maintains ongoing dialogue with CMS on the Part D program. Both organizations are interested in improving Part D for home infusion therapy patients covered by Medicare wherever feasible prior to passage of the needed legislation. NHIA and CMS are very interested in learning about problems that home infusion providers and patients experience with the Part D program. NHIA provides a tool for home infusion providers and others to submit problems to us. We turn over many submissions to CMS, which in turn looks at these problems to consider steps it may take to improve the program.
Beyond Medicare Part D, NHIA members will find useful NHIA resource centers on many other topics. Find all NHIA resource centers in the Quick Links (top left).
