Bruce T. Roberts, PD, R.Ph.

Bruce Roberts has devoted his professional life to the advancement of independent, community pharmacy and pharmacist-centered patient care.  He is a staunch supporter of the vital role that pharmacists can and must play in our increasingly complex health care delivery system.

As the founder and owner of three pharmacies and a home health care company, in Loudon County, Virginia, outside Washington, DC, Roberts always has been on the cutting edge: in offering innovative pharmacy services, in promoting the use of technology in the pharmacy, and in making the pharmacist an integral part of the health care team and the community.

His pharmacies have been leaders in compounding, nutritional counseling, health screenings, hospice care, and various disease state management services.  His home health care company provided home infusion, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, respiratory care services for both adult and pediatric patients, and durable medical equipment.

But Roberts saw the need to go beyond his roles as pharmacist and entrepreneur.  In doing so, he has served on the boards of both the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists and the American Society for Automation in Pharmacy.  Roberts also has served on the Expert Advisory Panel on Compounding for the U.S. Pharmacopeia and he continues on the Board of Trustees for Shenandoah University.

Roberts repeatedly has been recognized by his peers for innovation and excellence in community pharmacy practice, including: the Innovative Pharmacist of Virginia award in 1998, the Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year award from the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), also in 1998, and the Community Practitioner of the Year award from the American Pharmacists Association in 2000.

Roberts was named NCPA’s Executive Vice President in 2002 and he remains a tireless advocate for the profession, the business, and the future of independent, community pharmacy in the United States.
