Genuine collaboration among our peers—even within the same company, no less between organizations—takes time that is frequently not easy to come by. But innovative, transformational changes for our industry cannot happen without such diverse and committed exchanges. Despite our many economic challenges, staffing shortages and Medicare reimbursement coverage difficulties, we now find ourselves uniquely primed to embark upon new, imaginative alternate-site infusion “frontiers”—rising above any such adversity with shared focus and determination to construct an enriching future for our field, built around data-driven best practices, common ethical standards and enhanced care access. Through authentic partnership between all our varied industry stakeholders, we can be well situated to vigorously pursue these strategic endeavors.

John Crowley, Former CEO of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals Inc. and currently the President & CEO of Amicus Therapeutics, is no stranger to the value of determination, collaboration and bold imagination in the face of incredible adversity. After two of his young children were diagnosed with Pompe disease (a rare and fatal neuromuscular disorder that affects only several thousand children worldwide), Crowley defied the odds of survival and began a stirring journey to find a cure—parlaying his personal struggle into a professional juggernaut. The Crowley family story has been featured on the Today Show, as well as on the cover of The Wall Street Journal—and has now inspired a major motion picture, entitled Extraordinary Measures starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford that is set to release nationwide in January 2010. Drawing on his first-hand knowledge of the life-sustaining significance of infusion therapy, Crowley will share with us his courageous account of relentlessly harnessing determination, partnerships and creativity to do “whatever it takes” to achieve success—essential insights for us all, as we collaborate to construct our new frontiers!
