Constructing Our New Alternate-Site Infusion Frontiers—A Call To Action!
3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Hilton Anatole—Trinity II
General Session Education Overview:
Leveraging the strong foundation we’ve collectively built over recent and past years alike, the alternate-site infusion field is now poised for dynamic, unprecedented enrichment—provided we can further fortify industry partnerships around our commonalities! Unlike any time previously, we are strategically positioned to soundly construct new, innovative “frontiers” around industry-wide data collection and benchmarking; data-driven best practices; development of an ethics code; and passage of a meaningful Medicare benefit for home infusion therapy so that all older and disabled Americans can have equal access to care. Significant accomplishments in these vital areas will, ultimately, strengthen alternate-site business opportunities, while enhancing the quality of life for all the patients and families that NHIA members care for with such a high degree of compassion and commitment.
However, none of the above worthy initiatives can be achieved, if NHIA members do not continue to utilize their bold imaginations, engage in genuine collaboration, cultivate a shared focus and foster transformational leadership to bring about such innovation and change. Gather with key leaders from the NHIA Board and Executive Team to examine these crucial building blocks necessary to further systemic enrichment for your alternate-site business—and holistically for our field, as well. Comprehend what is truly required of all industry stakeholders to construct new frontiers that previously seemed unreachable!
Opening Entertainment:
Robert Strong—The Comedy Magician
Once we have started to wrap our imaginations around the enormous potential for constructing new and critical frontiers for our field, we will take a comedic and magical excursion into the world of Robert Strong. Known as “The Comedy Magician,” Strong has been crisscrossing the globe since 1985, entertaining audiences both large and small in more than 30 countries. And now he brings his lighthearted engagement of the audience, as well as the awe and amazement of his thrilling routines, to the “NHIA 2010” stage!
Strong has toured with stand-up comedians, Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers and Broadway directors—while also staring in national television commercials and appearing on every major network, including on the CBS This Morning show. Additionally, he has performed for the U.S. Congress and for two Presidents of the United States—Bush, Sr. and Clinton, so he is bi-partisan approved! Given the many industry related challenges and opportunities before us, The Comedy Magician is sure to help us loosen-up and embrace our own innovation, collaboration and teamwork. Simply put, this magical experience is sure to be both personally fun and position us all in the right place to professionally employ our imaginations!

Extraordinary Measures—Harnessing Determination, Collaboration and Imagination to Create the Future
9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Hilton Anatole—Trinity II
Education Overview:
Genuine collaboration among our peers—even within the same company, no less between organizations—takes time that is frequently not easy to come by. But innovative, transformational changes for our industry cannot happen without such diverse and committed exchanges. Despite our many economic challenges, staffing shortages and Medicare reimbursement coverage difficulties, we now find ourselves uniquely primed to embark upon new, imaginative alternate-site infusion “frontiers”—rising above any such adversity with shared focus and determination to construct an enriching future for our field, built around data-driven best practices, common ethical standards and enhanced care access. Through authentic partnership between all our varied industry stakeholders, we can be well situated to vigorously pursue these strategic endeavors.
John Crowley, Former CEO of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals Inc. and currently the President & CEO of Amicus Therapeutics, is no stranger to the value of determination, collaboration and bold imagination in the face of incredible adversity. After two of his young children were diagnosed with Pompe disease (a rare and fatal neuromuscular disorder that affects only several thousand children worldwide), Crowley defied the odds of survival and began a stirring journey to find a cure—parlaying his personal struggle into a professional juggernaut. The Crowley family story has been featured on the Today Show, as well as on the cover of The Wall Street Journal—and has now inspired a major motion picture, entitled Extraordinary Measures starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford that is set to release nationwide in January 2010. Drawing on his first-hand knowledge of the life-sustaining significance of infusion therapy, Crowley will share with us his courageous account of relentlessly harnessing determination, partnerships and creativity to do “whatever it takes” to achieve success—essential insights for us all, as we collaborate to construct our new frontiers!

NHIA Wednesday General Session
Featuring NHIA Leadership and Advocacy Experts
Now More Than Ever, We Must Further Grow Our Grassroots Capacity And Impact!
9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Hilton Anatole—Trinity II
Education Overview:
2009 was not just historic for health care reform debates within the 111th Congress—it was also a momentous year for NHIA members and their grassroots advocacy efforts! Never before have so many congressional contacts been made by constituents working in this field. And never before have we ever had so many co-sponsors for our legislation in both the House and the Senate to correct the Medicare home infusion reimbursement challenge. Yet, despite these impressive accomplishments, this new frontier of meaningful Medicare coverage remains somewhat elusive. Many groups from across the political spectrum are greatly invested in health care debates, as evidenced by the 3,300 registered lobbyists from more than 1,500 organizations working on the issue—that’s six lobbyists for each member of Congress, along with the hundreds of millions of dollars being poured in as well. Despite these challenges, we continue to possess a message of quality care associated with costs savings—and we must further collaborate together around our grassroots actions to strategically utilize that focused message to influence the 111th Congress, as it enters into its second year of work!
The NHIA Legislative Team and a panel of advocacy experts will review the latest developments taking place on Capitol Hill and assess what is needed to achieve advocacy success. Interactive in nature, this advocacy general session format will be conducive to open discussion with the audience and offer a chance to address specific questions about how current legislative activities may influence you and your organization—as well as what you need to do to enhance our grassroots impact. Without question, this new advocacy frontier that we face confronts us with the stern reality that Congress will be constantly challenging the health care provider community to do more for less. Our legislative plan will need to continue to evolve and grow to best represent our field and your interests—be sure to join us for this thoughtful, yet frank dialogue to strategically advance our shared focus and grassroots capacity.
